Intro To Media Questions

1.    List as many types (example: TV) of media as you can think of.
2.    Investigate ownership of the media in the US. Find an article or chart that will allow you to identify the corporations that actually own mainstream media outlets like ESPN, Disney, FoxNews, CNN, NBC, Etc.,  Write down what you find.
3.    Find a list that identifies universities with what are considered the top programs for journalism. Pick anyone you like, and then go to the website to investigate that school’s journalism program, as if you were a prospective student.  What can you learn about the professional values, standards, and practices associated with professional journalism?  (Write it down)
4.    Historically, the media in the United States has often been viewed as playing the role of “watchdog.” Do research to understand the watchdog role of the media so that you can answer these questions:  Who is being watched?  Who is being protected?  And from what?
5.    What have you heard about “liberal bias”? (Don’t do research for this one – just write down what you have heard about this phrase.  If you have never heard this phrase before, say so, and then explain what you think it might mean.)

1.TV, Newspapers, Internet, Social Media

Different types of media are associate with different demographics... For example, an issue if someone of the political party tweets is that the youth will be more encouraged or educated on this candidate. Also, some on twitter are too young to vote.
Newspaper readers are most informed citizens!!!!!!!! Because they take more time and read more in debt.
Issue Framing and Agenda Setting: know these words
Issue Framing is deciding how they want to say it. Agenda setting is how interesting a candidate is and whether they are on the agenda or not. For example, Trump is obnoxious but he gets the attention he wants.

2. The 6 Corporations Control 90% of The Media in America

3. 50 Best Journalism Schools and Programs at U.S. Colleges and Universities
-American University: "Our Journalism Division has former and current correspondents and editors from the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, AOL, Fox News, and U.S. News and World Report -- all media organizations where our alumni are working."… American values their students getting out of school with a job, they graduate ready for a career and in broadcasting with an impressive portfolio and audition tape.

4. Watchdog
-People with the most power in the government are being watched, they are protecting the people without power and are protecting them from the higher up people abusing their power.

5. I have never heard this phrase. I think this means that liberals are bias towards certain concepts. Meaning they will vote for certain people if they have the same ideas or desires as them.

The Shocking Ending

This Saturday was heartbreaking for Michigan fans. Michigan state ended the game in a very surprising/awesome fashion. All the Michigan punter, Blake O'Neil had to do to win the game was take a knee after catching the long snap, and he fumbled. With 10 seconds remaining, Michigan State's Jalen Watts-Jackson scooped up the fumbled ball and ran 38 yards for the game-winning touchdown. Although it was a very happy ending, it was a bitter-sweet ending for Watts-Jackson. When he was tackled in the end-zone after scoring the winning touchdown, he fractured his hip. He immediately had to have surgery today. Watts-Jackson was not the only one in pain. According to CBS Detoit, a spectator on Saturday afternoon suffered from a heart attack in the stands. The name was not given, but "Emergency medical personnel got to that person right away anew ere able to take that person to the University of Michigan emergency department for further treatment." said Diane Brown (the University of Michigan public information officer). This current event brought back great memories of the Auburn vs. Alabama game last year when Auburn won the game with one second left. I am glad to hear the person who suffered from the heart attack is okay!

The 6th U.S. High School Football Player to Die This Season

Cam'ron Matthews was a high school football player from Texas. He played for the Alto Yellowjackets'. Before his death, he was in a huddle and told his teammates he felt dizzy, but no one thought anything of it. A few minutes later he collapsed, and was immediately reported by a helicopter to a Tyler hospital. Multiple media outlets, including CNN, reported Cam'ron has a seizure on the field. People talked very highly of Cam'ron, claiming he was not only a good athlete but a great student and kid. The community gathered around the field and shared stories about cam'ron, and mourned and prayed for his family and friends. This is heartbreaking.

Teen Beaten To Death in New York Church

Two parents have been charged with manslaughter of their teenage son (19) who was beaten to death in a upstate New York church. Authorities say his younger brother (17) was severely beaten as well for several hours. Neighbors of the church claim they “always joked the church was a cult,” and apparently they were. Four others have been charged with assault of these young victims including the victim’s sister. The investigation is still ongoing, and the reporters say to expect more arrests. WOW. I am shocked parents are able to beat their kids to death.

Ex Texas A&M Player Murders Innocent Man

According to Dallas police, Thomas Johnson attacked and murdered a random jogger on Monday morning with a "large-edged weapon." Police say there was no motive for the attack. This type of attack is very random and unusual. After attacking the innocent man, Thomas Johnson walked to a nearby equestrian center and called 911. The victim has been unidentified and is a white male between the ages of 25 and 35. Johnson was one of the highest-rated receiving prospects when he came out of high school, and played 10 games for Texas A&M as a freshman in 2012. He disappeared from campus randomly after a game against Alabama, and was later found safe in Dallas, but never returned to college football. This is both scary and sad to me. It scares me for the innocent man and his family, and makes me even more scared of the random crazy people out there. It is sad to me because Thomas Johnson clearly has an issue that has not been yet discovered.

Current Event- Donald Trump

I picked a current event on politics. I picked a current event on Trump simply because he is entertaining. After Hillary Clinton bashed Trump outside of his Las Vegas hotel on Saturday, Trump decided to tweet an update throughout the democratic debate. His first tweet was, "At the request of many, and even though I expect it to be a very boring two hours, I will be covering the Democratic debate live on Twitter!" I believe I can relate this current event to our recent lesson in class on the Speaker of the House because Trump is running for power, and he has people who do not support him just like Kevin Mccarthy. Trump has made it much further than McCarthy, but he has made many people mad just like John Boehner. I am interested to see the final decision of the presidential election.

Speaker of the House

Jordan Loftin

1.     The Constitution does not have a specific role of the Speaker of the House other than that they are chosen by the House of Representatives. The Speaker influences which bills go to which committees, influences committee assignments for new members, appoints the party’s other leaders, and rules on question of parliamentary procedure.
2.???????

House of Representatives
Senate
Leadership of the House- Speaker
Job- influence where bills go and if they are made
- appoints party leaders
- rules on parliamentary procedure
- presides or leads over speaking on the floor
Leadership of the Senate- President Pro Tempore
Job- selected to take VP's place
- a chair often passed to a junior Senator in a ceremony

Majority Leader
Job- hand picked by speaker
- plans legislative program
- Second ranked member of the majority party
Majority Leader- Vice President
Job- only votes in event of tie
- president of the senate
Minority Leader
Job- organizes minority party
- limited influence
Minority Leader

3.The President and Vice President would both have to die or be removed/impeached for the Speaker to become the President.
    4. Samuel Rayburn was the longest-serving Speaker in History.
    5. Nancy Plosi became the first woman to be The Speaker of The House in 2007 and she represented the Democratic Party.
    6. Newt Gingrich served as speaker from 1994-1999, he is famous for leading the Republican Revolution in 1994.
    7. John Boehner just resigned as Speaker of the House. He served in Congress for 20 years and was Speaker for 4 years, he quit because he was the leading Republican Party and was not supported by the Democratic Party, which is obvious. But his problem was that he was not supported by his own party, because the Republican Party is so divided. He felt like he could no longer lead the Republican Party
    8. Kevin McCarthy was considered to be a likely successor of John Boehner because he was the second highest ranked republican. But his is no longer the case because he knew hew as not going to win. He called all members of the house and too many refused to support him.
    9. The Republicans of Congress want Paul Ryan to enter the race for Speaker because he has a good reputation with the most conservative members of the Republican Party. He is also physically appealing, which sadly has influence on election. The latest news is that he has said he is not planning to run but he is thinking about it. A little contradicting, huh?
     10. Paul Ryan currently chairs the Ways and Means Committee. Ways and Means Committee is the chief-tax writing committee in the House. The committee has power over revenues (a states annual income from which public expenses are met) such as Medicare, debt of the United States, Social Security, and more.
     11. There are 48 congressional committees. A congressional committee is a “legislative sub-organization in the US Congress that handles a specific day (rather than the general duties of the Congress). Committee membership enables members to develop specialized knowledge of the matters under their jurisdiction.”
     12. Paul Ryan may choose not to take the job because the House is fractured and he says, “there is little chance Republicans can achieve legislative victories while President Obama is still in the White House.”
     13. If I was under Paul Ryan’s position, I think it would be a very difficult and frustrating job to deal with. But at the same time, although the House is broken and mainly democratic, I think I could make a change. Why not put effort into helping your country with what you believe is right? Also, Obama will not be there much longer and if a Republican is elected I believe there is a high chance of putting the pieces of the House back together.
    14. The Speaker of the house has never become president and the Speaker of the House is not a stepping-stone to the White House.
    15. A congressional caucus is “a group of members of the US Congress that meets to pursue common legislative objectives. Formally, caucuses are formed as congressional member organizations (CMOs) through the US House of Representatives and governed under the rules of the chamber.” The difference between a caucus and a committee is that there are about 75 caucuses and that committees have power over specific issues, but caucuses are groups that members form to follow common legislative objectives.
    16. The House of Freedom Caucus is a congressional caucus consisting of conservative Republican members of the US House of Representatives. During the current struggle of leadership, “The House of Freedom Caucus gives a voice to countless Americans who feel that Washington does not represent them. We support open, accountable, and limited government, the Constitution and the real law, and policies that promote liberty, safety and prosperity of all Americans.” Members want a speaker that will give the people more say in how the House is ran.

    17. Although this current event is not specifically related to the Speaker of the House, I picked a current event on politics. I picked a current event on Trump simply because he is entertaining. After Hillary Clinton bashed Trump outside of his Las Vegas hotel on Saturday, Trump decided to tweet an update throughout the democratic debate. His first tweet was, "At the request of many, and even though I expect it to be a very boring two hours, I will be covering the Democratic debate live on Twitter!" I believe I can relate this current event to the Speaker of the House because Trump is running for power, and he has people who do not support him just like Kevin Mccarthy.
